48th Annual NEWGLSF Salmon Derby:Weekend of Fishing and Conservation

The Manitowoc Marina was abuzz with excitement as it hosted the 48th Annual Northeastern Wisconsin Great Lakes Sport Fishermen (NEWGLSF) Salmon Derby from June 30th to July 2nd, 2023. This highly anticipated event, organized just before the Coho Salmon release at Lincoln Park Zoo, drew 358 enthusiastic participants who collectively caught an impressive total of 807 fish.

Event Highlights

The Salmon Derby kicked off on Friday, June 30th, with derby headquarters at the Manitowoc Marina and weigh-ins at The Wharf in Sheboygan. Participants competed for top prizes in five different fish divisions, with daily awards for the largest fish in each category. The derby culminated in a festive party on July 4th, which continued until the city fireworks display.

Community and Conservation

The 48th Annual Salmon Derby was not just a competition; it was a celebration of community, conservation, and a deep connection to nature. Reflecting on the principles of Ojibwe thinking, which emphasize respect for all living things and the interconnectedness of nature, this event underscored the importance of stewardship and sustainability.

The Ojibwe people believe that every part of nature is connected and must be respected and protected. This philosophy aligns perfectly with our mission to preserve the Great Lakes ecosystem. By participating in the Salmon Derby, community members not only enjoyed a weekend of fishing but also engaged in an important conservation effort. This event, held just before the Coho Salmon release, reinforced the significance of working together to maintain the balance and health of our natural resources.

Participants of all ages came together to enjoy the derby while supporting efforts to protect the Great Lakes. As we reflect on the teachings of the Ojibwe, we are reminded of our responsibility to honor and care for the land and water that sustains us.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this event a resounding success. Your enthusiasm and support are vital to our mission of protecting our waters and wildlife. We look forward to seeing you at next year's derby, continuing our shared journey of conservation and respect for nature.
